Fluconazole Side Effects (Top voted first)

Updated

I would like to know any and all side effects to this particular medication. I have been experiencing stomach ache, headache, low backache, palpitations, taste, nausea. Are these normal side effects? and if not, should I stop taking them. Of course, you can't reach a doctor over the weekend. I have taken 9 doses in 10 days. I forgot to take my normal dose on Friday night and felt great the next day but took one last night when I realized that I had missed a dose, and woke up in the middle of the night feeling sick again. This has been going on for the last 3 or 4 doses. The reaction usually occurs 4-6 hours after taking the pill.

..... Says the person who is posting on a side effect website they probably discovered from googling "why is my medicine making me feel crazy?"..... Sorry you are on the medication for 6 months. Hope you get better soon (maybe the chip on your shoulder will dissolve by that time).

I took 1 pill (only) 4 days ago to cure a yeast infection and it caused my heart to race, shortness of breath, insomnia and electric sensations throughout my body (please note: I already have an arrhythmia w/acute tachycardia). I finally took a beta blocker last night so my heart would calm down and I could sleep. I went to a cardiologist yesterday that told me this medication should not cause any issue with my heart - which I thought was ridiculous since I'm obviously feeling these symptoms. I also found on the internet that diflucan can actually CAUSE a particular arrhythmia. i still don't feel 100% since the beta blocker is now wearing off. does anyone know exactly how long diflucan can stay in your system? bottom line... if you have any heart issues, run from this drug.

I had no ill side effects for the first week (150 mg). Second week I felt a little dizzy and my urine was a little darker than usual. I have finished taking all the doses and hoped the side effects would stop soon. I have been experienceing some tiredness. Should I be worried about any of these. The dizziness and the darker urine seem to be combined and only last a few hours at a time.

Hi, I'm the one who posted about ringworm and having horrible side effects of the med. Turns out, it wasn't basic ringworm (which explains why it wouldn't respond to OTC or otherwise remedies), I apparently have candida overgrowth. This also causes most of my so-called illnesses and strange symptoms like foggy-mind, sinus infections, etc. When I took this med I thought it was either poison or I was severely allergic. I felt horrible!!!! However, after doing some research I discovered that my symptoms from the med were actually candida die-off! It may amplify whatever issues you are experiencing while the die off occurs. Candida is hard to get rid of and can ravage your body when u try. My advice to those suffering from this med, look into candida overgrowth and candida die-off!!! Your bad reaction to this medicine may be the toxins bring released as the candida dies. If u think this could be your issue: try a yeast cleanse. One with all natural ingredients. I am taking a pill form and had to cut back because they due off symptoms were so strong. I now take half a dose and I'm coping much better. Once u complete the yeast detox, find a good pro-biotic for the long haul. -good luck!! Hope that helps someone!!!

Hi, regarding the ringworm and your side effects - I am taking this drug to fight Candida overgrowth and experienced very similar side effects. It is partially the drug and partially Candida die off effect.I think Candida overgrowth can cause skin conditions like ringworm. It might be worth checking it out as your side effects might not be caused by just the drug...? It is only a suggestion. I was supposed to take 50mg Fluconazole three times a day, but after two days I couldn't take it - insomnia, anxiety, dizzy as hell, vomiting .. you name it. Dr suggested to stop for two days to catch up with my sleep and start on extremely low doses - open up the capsule and put a few drops of the powder on a teaspoon and take with water with meal. I started on 1/8 capsule a day, after a few days it was 1/4 capsule etc - now after 3 weeks I am on 1 whole 50mg capsule a day (1/3 capsule 3 times daily) and my body seems fine with it. This also means I have to take it for longer but better that than suffer. I tried increasing to 1/2 capsule three times daily, but this morning I felt a bit anxious and have abdominal pains so I will go back to 1/3. Anyways, try looking into the Candida thing and good luck.

Male 68: I have had systemic yeast problem for 20 years . Felt foggy a lot. Played golf like Tiger Woods one day and Mr Bean the next. I have had a white tongue for this time.I have used 3 lac and Symbion and they were the best probiotics.I just tried Diflucan - 50 mg for 5 days and 100 mg for 4 days. I ended up being semi depressed with aching muscles and joints- could hardly walk. I think this stuff is deadly.Has it cured systemic yeast problems for anyone? Can anyone who has cured themselves of systemic long time yeast infection advise how they did it?

I took it for 6 days and on the 6th day started have stomach cramps, gas and dirrhea a little then had it so bad for three days and had to get an iv at the hospital due to dehydration. It's seems to be getting better but am still having some dirrhea off and on. This has been going on for almost a week now. I was told by the dr that fluconazole can stay in your system for 10 days.

You poor thing, I only had to take 2 doses of it. I can't imagine taking it for that long. The pharmacist had told me it could make you feel sick and if it does to take it with food. I did find this online though:

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at your next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. What happens if I overdose? Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. Symptoms of a Diflucan overdose may include confusion or unusual thoughts or behavior. What should I avoid while taking Diflucan?

Follow your doctor's instructions about any restrictions on food, beverages, or activity while you are using Diflucan.
What are the possible side effects of Diflucan? Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

*
nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
*
fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms;
*
severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash;
*
easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness; or
*
seizure (convulsions).

Less serious Diflucan side effects may include:

*
mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or upset stomach;
*
headache;
*
dizziness;
*
unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth; or
*
skin rash or itching.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088. What other drugs will affect Diflucan?

Before taking Diflucan, tell your doctor if you are using any of the following drugs:

*
astemizole (Hismanal).
*
a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin);
*
cyclosporine (Gengraf, Sandimmune, Neoral);
*
an oral diabetes medicine such as glipizide (Glucotrol), glyburide (Diabeta, Micronase, Glynase), tolbutamide (Orinase), tolazamide (Tolinase), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), and others;
*
rifabutin (Mycobutin) or rifampin (Rifadin, Rifater, Rifamate, Rimactane);
*
a sedative such as diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan), alprazolam (Xanax), or midazolam (Versed);
*
seizure medication such as phenytoin (Dilantin) or valproic acid (Depakene);
*
tacrolimus ((Prograf); or
*
theophylline (Theo-Dur, Theolair, Theochron, Elixophyllin, Slo-Phyllin, others).

If you are using any of these drugs, you may not be able to use Diflucan, or you may need dosage adjustments or special tests during treatment.

There may be other drugs not listed that can affect Diflucan. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.

I took this product for the first time today (just 150mg) and a few hours later I had terrible abdominal pain and nausea. I vomited soon thereafter.

I have been on the 150 dose for three days now for resistant ringworm. :( Obviously I found this forum because I am up looking for answers because I feel so ill! I still have 4 doses to go and I don't think I can do this another day. The symptoms are progressively worse with each day. My first negative symptom occurred approx an hour after the first dose. I had a full blown panic attack. I was jittery, anxious, had palpitations (I have MVP), cold sweats, dizzy, slow pulse, and became very tired... The heavy symptoms wore off over the night as I slept. Next day/dose same symptoms but stronger with nausea. And the third day/dose I am experiencing even more intense symptoms. This is terrible. I'll be calling the Dr in the morning to see about a dif med... Possibly another ointment. This one doesn't feel right. Also: my ringworm has not dissipated whatsoever.

You are right, Ct112. I was just going to address this until I read this post. I had severe candida overgrowth and I went on the anti-yeast diet and took probiotics etc. all without taking Diflucan/fluconazole and I had all of those same "side effects" that are listed for the drug. It is the effect of the yeast die-off in your system! This drug is an anti-fungal that is prescribed for chronic yeast infections. This probably means that there is a more systemic yeast problem than is realized and severe die-off reaction is to be expected. If you are consistent it does get better!!!

Diflucan side effects have been horrid. I took on 150mg pill on Thursday and now 8 days later I have tingling in most extremities, numbness is legs and arms, palpations for the first 4 days after eating a meal and now twiching in legs in face. I stopped after 1 pill, got a steriod shot from the doctor who prescribed the medicine and have taken 200-400 mg of benedryl a day to lessen the symtoms. Avoid Diflucan if at all possible!

I took one dose of Fluconazole (here in Switzerland known as Fluconax) and have had diarrhea for four days, each day getting progressively worse. I did read that this could be a side effect but never imagined it could be so bad!

I have taken Fluconazole twice now and had a both times I have had a very bad reaction to it. The first time Dr thought it was the antibiotics that I was taking. This time I took it on its own, I was violently sick, covered in a purple rash very cold felt as if some was puting electric shocks through me, violent headache could not cope with bright lights, today I feel very tired last time it took me 4 days to feel back to rights.

I prescribed a heavy dose of this to fight yeat infection in my breast. I'm breastfeeding and they said continue its safe to do so. I did it when I had to take one pill for a regular yeast infection and it didn't bother us. Now we both have diahrea and I'm having bad cramps. He is fussy as hell I can't sleep and don't feel like eating. I was told this is the way they have to fight yeast infection in breast and it has to be this aggressive. Does anyone know if u can take diahrea meds with this to help.

I am on the one dose and have had afib episodes for 3 of four days following, headache, fevers, chills and aching in my abdominal and pelvic region nonstop. Tomorrow morning will be day 5 of these awful side effects. I am being told it's the flu, but I don't buy that at all. This drug is powerful and can remain in one's system. I'm going to try and find out how long.
